Confirmation at Christ Lutheran is a two year process meant to increase the personal relationship with God in the lives of 7th and 8th grade youth. The Confirmation Process covers two alternating years of instruction. The first year covers the six chief parts of the Small Catechism using the program Confirmation Builder from CPH. The second year focuses on discipleship using the LifeShapes curriculum and Biblical knowledge with See Through the Scriptures by Crossways International. Students are given an ESV Bible, a Luther’s Small Catechism, and a three ring binder to keep their papers, projects, and quizzes.
Confirmation Builder is a collection of resources for confirmation that provides a framework for presenting students the basics of Christian doctrine. Each of the customizable lessons uses the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism as the main texts, and includes background reading, devotional information, PowerPoint® presentations, discussion questions and activities that will be used as a basic curriculum. Confirmation Builder is available for your perusal at http://www.confirmationbuilder.com
Studies have shown that Confirmation is most effective when parents are included and involved; this can mean anything from conducting family devotions at home to actually teaching the class. In addition to parental support, mentors meet with individual students and encourage them in their faith walk. Research also indicates that technology is a must for this age group; teachers use PowerPoint®, web based research projects, and possibly online quizzes. There are opportunities for field trips, conferences, and service projects. Memory work will be up to the individual family, but is strongly supported by the pastor and curriculum.
